The 1864 Battle of Westport was fought in modern-day Kansas City. Confederate troops under Major General Sterling Price were defeated by Union forces under Major General Samuel R. Curtis. It was the largest Civil War battle fought west of the Mississippi and is considered a decisive turning point in the war against the Confederacy.
