Political life in the Missouri frontier was chaotic, and often dangerous. Local elections were personal – candidates relied on loyal friends and connections to win races more than on platforms and issues. Upper-class duels between candidates and lawmakers was an accepted and common method of settling disputes. Missouri’s political climate was thus conditioned by conflict.

The region was also experiencing an unprecedented population boom. Society was fast expanding and with it ambition. Missourians began growing dissatisfied with their territorial status.
